About the work
Adriaen Coorte worked in Middelburg, a wealthy Dutch port that fostered a poetic and scientific study of the natural world. Gooseberries were a modest local pleasure, picked wild, though Dutch gardeners of the 1600s were the first to cultivate them. Strong light gives the small plant a stark grandeur, and the dark background brings out the translucent fruit, its skin on the verge of bursting. Painted in 1701.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
