About the work
Published by Robert John Thornton between 1799 and 1807, this plate combines aquatint, stipple, line engraving, etching and roulette. Printmaking techniques developed in the 18th century gave botanical prints a rich range of tones; aquatint in particular imitates the delicacy and transparency of watercolour and ink wash, seen here in the cool blue-greens of the passion-flower and its shadowy setting.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
