About the work
Morris designed Snakeshead in 1877, when Indian silks were in fashion; its small motifs and strong red and black were stylish only briefly before paler colours regained favour. The pattern features one of his favourite flowers, the fritillary, which he remembered growing in the meadows near Oxford. This printed cotton was made at Walthamstow in the early 20th century in imitation of Morris’s design.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
