About the work
Johan Christian Dahl painted this dramatic view of the Feige Waterfall at Lysterfjord, one of the most spectacular natural wonders of his homeland, in 1848, when Norwegians were fostering their identity as a distinct national culture. Set against a mountain cliff, the waterfall empties into a fjord that stretches nearly 70 miles to the ocean. Views like this made Dahl the leading Norwegian artist of his day and one of the most important Romantic landscape painters.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
