About the work
Ambrosius Bosschaert was one of the first artists to specialise in flower painting and may have been inspired by the botanical gardens and scientific collections of his hometown, Middelburg. The flowers in this bouquet of 1606 might be common today, but then they were costly rarities. Bosschaert captured their fragile beauty in luminous colour and exquisite detail; look for the small creatures that bring the still life to life.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
