About the work
Corot based this large painting of about 1830–31 on drawings and oil sketches made outdoors around Rome, where he lived from 1825 to 1828. Its carefully structured composition, with forms moving into the distance along a series of diagonals, is typical of his early style and recalls the classical landscapes of the 17th-century painter Nicolas Poussin.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
