About the work
Abraham van Beyeren’s large, opulent still lifes were made to be seen from a slight distance, perhaps installed over a mantelpiece. Up close the silver wine jug is a flurry of rough, almost abstract strokes; from a distance it becomes a gleaming object full of reflections, including a ghostly self-portrait of the artist at his easel. Painted c. 1660–66.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
