About the work
One of several views Monet painted in 1882 of Pourville, a fishing village on the Normandy coast with a broad beach and striking cliffs. He wrote that one could not be any closer to the sea than he was, “on the pebbled beach itself, and the waves beat at the foot of the house.” Look closely: the narrow black strokes at the water’s edge beneath the cliff are bathers.
