About the work
Pissarro painted this monumental landscape in 1879, when he was struggling to sell his work. A man dozes in the sun-dappled woods of L’Hermitage, the village near Pontoise where the artist had lived since 1872, with a goat beside him. Pissarro limited himself to pure hues laid in systematic diagonal strokes, an effect he likened to knitting. The canvas was shown in the fourth Impressionist exhibition of 1879.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
