About the work
Van Gogh painted this autumn street in 1889 while living at the psychiatric hospital near Saint-Rémy in southern France, where his doctor let him paint outdoors because it eased his symptoms. He described it to his brother Theo: “a view of the village, where they were at work under some enormous plane trees, repairing the pavements… There are heaps of sand, stones, and the gigantic trunks, the leaves yellowing.”
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
