About the work
During the 1910s Piet Mondrian moved from Cubism to an abstract art based on the grid, limiting himself to horizontal and vertical lines, the three primary colours, and black and white. He believed that after the devastation of the First World War such compositions could help bring about a more harmonious society by speaking a universal visual language. The thin wooden strip around the canvas, painted grey, is Mondrian’s original frame. Painted in 1927.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
