About the work
The Atlantic surf pounding the coast at Prouts Neck, Maine, was the great subject of Winslow Homer’s last decades, and he called this “the best picture of the sea that I have painted.” First conceived as a watercolour, the composition was taken up in oil nearly two decades later; Homer waited for the right atmospheric conditions and painted it in four sessions over two years, 1900–1903.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
