About the work
Falcons were prized in royal hunting expeditions, and this painting of about 1610, from the Rajput Kingdom of Amber in Rajasthan, may portray a favourite bird or a gift from an ally. The falcon faces left, its talons tied to the perch with black string. The light green ground, a thin coat of malachite, and the flowering trees and plants show the artist’s awareness of Persian, Mughal or Deccani painting.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
