About the work
Henri Rousseau never left France; he built his jungle scenes from travel books and visits to the Paris botanical garden. Here an imaginary struggle between a tiger and a buffalo is set in a fantastic jungle where botanical accuracy matters little (note the bananas growing upside down) and hothouse plants are enlarged to fearsome size. He was working on it while imprisoned for fraud in December 1907 and was released early to finish it for the Salon des Indépendants of March 1908.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
