About the work
The Ryōgoku Bridge spanned the Sumida River between bustling neighbourhoods of Edo (present-day Tokyo). In this 1858 print Hiroshige gives nearly half the composition to the night sky. Riverside restaurants and businesses often sponsored such displays in the 1850s, drawing crowds onto the bridge, along the shore, into teashops and onto rented pleasure boats.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
