About the work
Indian artists of the late 1700s and early 1800s painted native birds, plants and animals for British collectors living in Calcutta (now Kolkata), in an age fascinated by scientific discovery. This small crested bird is named after the sound of its call, ‘hoopoe’. The dense, controlled brushwork that gives texture to its plumage and claws reveals the artist’s training in Indian court traditions. Painted around 1800.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
