About the work
Albert Bierstadt sketched in California’s Yosemite Valley in the summer of 1863 and later used those studies in his New York studio for majestic paintings like this 1866 view of the distant granite peak Mount Starr King. Such scenes thrilled East Coast audiences and helped encourage early efforts to protect natural wonders; in 1864 President Lincoln signed a bill preserving Yosemite as public property.
