About the work
William Morris wanted textiles to work as he imagined medieval wall hangings had, bringing warmth to stone-cold rooms; Peacock and Dragon, woven in thick wool in 1878, is the closest he came to that ideal. That year he saw a room re-created from Damascus at a London dealer’s, “all vermillion and gold and ultramarine,” which partly inspired its exotic motifs. It was one of his most popular designs, available in five colourways.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
