About the work
Hokusai designed the series One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets Explained by the Nurse (1835–36) as if a nurse were illustrating classical verse and missing its subtle allusions, a deliberately comic gap between word and image. Where the nobleman Minamoto no Muneyuki (died 939) wrote of dying grasses and the loneliness of a mountain village in winter, the ‘nurse’ imagines a lively scene of hunters warming themselves around a fire.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
