About the work
Painted in 1864, the first productive year of Monet’s career, this still life shows his early fascination with fleeting effects of light. Isolated against a dark background, full-blown peonies, potted hydrangeas and basketed lilacs spill downward and outward from the geraniums at the back, while energetic brushwork catches the sparkle of light on leaves and petals. “I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers,” Monet said.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
