About the work
Perhaps the most recognisable of Morris’s textiles, Strawberry Thief celebrates the thrushes in the garden at Kelmscott Manor; his daughter May recalled him insisting that no bird in the garden be touched, however much they raided the fruit beds. With this design Morris perfected the indigo-discharge process: the whole cloth was dyed blue, then bleached and block printed, here with more colours than any other Morris textile. This length was printed around 1936.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
