About the work
Cézanne built this 1890 composition in three horizontal planes: the azure sky, the luminous white tower and farm buildings, and the burnt-orange earth of the foreground, its colour typical of the iron-rich soil of Provence. Cypress and olive trees shimmer across the middle ground. Pared down to essentials, it shows his ambition “to make something solid and enduring, like the art in museums.”
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
