About the work
Fruit still lifes were extremely popular in the later 1700s, and a basket of plums was a common motif. In Anne Vallayer-Coster’s painting of 1769 the plums and basket emerge from deep shadow in vivid reds and violets, with growing moss, cakes in crisp papers and a glass of water catching sparkling highlights. She also painted a companion piece with peaches and cherries.
