About the work
Berthe Morisot’s sister Edma posed for this 1873 painting of a woman seated on her shawl in a field, reading, her parasol and fan dropped on the grass. Her white dress catches the light and shadow of the outdoors, its floral pattern echoing the meadow’s wildflowers. X-rays show that Morisot repainted Edma’s eyes, which once met the viewer’s gaze; her figures are usually absorbed in their own tasks or thoughts.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
