About the work
An amateur meteorologist, John Constable was most at home painting closely observed clouds, weather and natural light, which he believed conveyed the vitality of the English countryside. Working from the summer house he rented at Hampstead from 1819 to 1826, he painted this 1828 landscape, giving more attention to the dark rain clouds than to the labourers in the foreground.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
