About the work
In this late-afternoon view of Boston Harbor (c. 1846–47), Fitz Henry Lane captured the diffuse quality of sunlight reflecting off water. The son of a shipbuilder, he painted ships and their rigging with painstaking accuracy. On the far left, a steamboat that ferried passengers between Boston and Gloucester signals the new technology of the age.
