About the work
Pieter Holsteyn II made this watercolour around 1645 for a tulip book, a grower’s marketing tool during the so-called tulip mania, a speculative bubble in 17th-century Holland when ten bulbs could cost more than a stately Amsterdam canal house. The flame-like striations, caused by a virus in the bulb, made a tulip especially valuable. The variety’s Dutch name is inscribed on the sheet.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
