About the work
In his New York studio, Frederic Edwin Church painted this blazing sunset over the wilderness near Mount Katahdin in Maine, which he had sketched nearly two years earlier. Made in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War, it can be read as evoking the coming conflagration. Church showed it on its own at a prestigious gallery, and several hundred spectators came to see it during its seven-week run.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
