About the work
Thomas Cole made a small pencil sketch of this view of Florence shortly before sunset on his visit to Italy in 1831. Six years later, in his New York studio, he turned it into this large oil painting, adding picturesque figures and goats in the foreground. The novelist Henry James grew up with the painting and called its foreground monk his “constant friend.”
