About the work
Gustave Caillebotte painted this dramatic view of the blue-green sea under a cloud-dappled sky from a cliff at Trouville, a popular resort on the Normandy coast. The brick villas in the foreground offered their owners a private shoreline retreat. In the early 1880s Caillebotte spent several summers on this coast, painting, racing in sailing regattas and visiting friends. Painted in 1884.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
