About the work
Gauguin left for Tahiti in 1891, and this canvas is among the first paintings he completed on the island. Its rich colours and stylised figures were meant to be both symbolic and mysterious. Four women sit in a frieze-like row in the shelter of a large tree, whose leaves add a decorative pattern to the pink thatched roof. “I obtain symphonies,” he wrote, “harmonies that represent nothing real in the absolute sense of the word.”
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
