About the work
Chardin was already famous by 1730, when he began painting small, sparse still lifes of kitchen utensils, rearranging the same few objects until each sat in balance with the rest. Against the fashionable lightness of the Rococo, he found a hidden poetry in humble things, bringing the viewer into an everyday world seen with directness and simplicity. Painted c. 1734.
Printed on 200 gsm museum-quality matte paper from the museum’s high-resolution open-access image, with a white border so nothing of the original is cropped. Available from A4 up to 70 × 100 cm, or as a digital download to print yourself.
